Literary Context
Psalm 12 moves from complaint about widespread deceit and bullying speech to confidence that God will not ignore it. The surrounding lines (earlier in the psalm) describe people whose words are smooth, double, and self-exalting, while their targets are vulnerable. Verse 5 functions as a turning point: instead of only the psalmist describing the problem, God speaks directly and answers it. After this divine statement, the psalm continues toward assurance that God’s words are dependable and that he will guard those threatened by the surrounding culture’s corrupt talk.
