Psalm 12:8 closes with a public snapshot, not a private mood. It says the “wicked” are moving around on “every side,” suggesting they are hard to avoid and are operating openly in ordinary life. It also says “what is vile” is “exalted” among “the sons of men,” meaning common human society is treating something shameful as important or admirable. Those two statements are linked: when a community lifts up what is vile, wickedness spreads and becomes confident and visible (Psalm 12:8).

This ending sits next to the earlier confidence that God will guard (v.7). It does not deny that hope; it adds realism about the surrounding environment. The psalm can hold both: God’s protection and an ongoing social atmosphere where wrong is still publicly celebrated.

1) What “walk on every side” emphasizes. Some read it mainly as “the wicked are everywhere” (widespread presence). Others hear an extra edge of “unchecked freedom” or “license,” because the image is of people moving around without restraint.

2) What “vile” refers to. Some take it as vile actions and values being praised. Others think it may include vile people being promoted—unworthy people being elevated to honor.

3) Who “sons of men” points to. Some hear it as society broadly (ordinary human community). Others think the phrase indirectly highlights public leaders, since leaders often set what gets “exalted,” even if the wording itself remains general.

Why the disagreement exists The verse is short and poetic, so its phrases can carry more than one natural sense. “Walking around” can describe either mere presence or confident freedom. “Vile” can name behavior, values, or persons. And “sons of men” is a broad human phrase that can still include a special focus on those who shape public honor.
