In that setting, travelers faced real hazards: rough paths, fatigue, exposure, and the worry that protection might fail at the wrong moment. The imagery of a steady foot and an always-awake guardian speaks into those ordinary dangers. While the psalm’s exact date is uncertain, its language fits a communal life where individuals and the nation thought of themselves as a people under ongoing divine oversight in daily movement and public identity.

These lines present God as a “keeper” (a guarding, watching protector) whose care does not pause. The text makes two linked claims: the keeper will not allow the person’s “foot” to be moved, and the reason is that the keeper does not drift into drowsiness.
