Literary Context
Psalm 129 is a short, tightly moving poem that begins with Israel remembering long oppression, then turns to confidence that the oppressors will be turned back and shamed. The middle uses an image of rooftop grass: it looks like it sprouts quickly but dries out before it can be harvested. Verse 8 closes that image with a “harvest-field” kind of exchange, but it is missing here. By ending with unsaid blessings, the psalm finishes its contrast: Israel endures, but those who oppose them fade and are left without celebration or honor.
