Literary Context
Psalm 135 is a public song of praise that calls the worshiping community to bless Yahweh and then supplies reasons: Yahweh’s greatness over other powers, his control over creation, and his decisive actions in Israel’s story. Verses 13–14 sit near the end of that reasons section, functioning like a hinge and summary: what Yahweh has done is not only past history, because his name and reputation continue. The “for” in verse 14 gives a reason for verse 13: his enduring renown is shown in his continued involvement with “his people” and “his servants.”
Historical Context
As a temple-oriented praise psalm, Psalm 135 fits a setting where Israel gathered for worship and retold shared memories of national deliverance and land settlement. The language assumes an ongoing covenant community (“his people,” “his servants”) living across generations, needing reassurance that their God is not confined to the past. The verse pair also echoes well-known older formulations about God’s lasting name and his engagement in Israel’s disputes and distress, suggesting the psalm is drawing on established worship language rather than a single, dated event.
Theological Significance
These two verses connect God’s lasting identity with God’s ongoing involvement. Verse 13 makes an explicit claim: Yahweh’s “name” endures forever, and his “renown” (remembered reputation) continues “throughout all generations.” The point is not only that God exists, but that what can be truthfully said and remembered about him does not fade with time.

Verse 14 then gives a reason (“For”) that ties endurance to action: Yahweh “will judge his people” and “have compassion on his servants.” In the flow of the psalm, God’s past mighty acts are not treated as a closed chapter; the God known from earlier generations remains the same God who still engages with his community.
The main question is what “judge his people” means in context. Some read it mainly as God defending his people—taking up their case and ruling in their favor when they are wronged. Others read it mainly as God disciplining his people—evaluating them and correcting them when they are in the wrong. Many interpreters allow room for both ideas: God’s judging can include setting things right both against enemies and within the community.
A smaller question is how broadly “his servants” should be taken. Some take it as another name for the whole covenant community. Others hear a narrower sense: those within the people who are especially faithful.
The Hebrew idea of “judging” can cover more than courtroom punishment; it can also mean giving a verdict that rescues the vulnerable and settles disputes. At the same time, “judge” can also mean holding people accountable. The parallel line about “compassion” pushes readers toward a protective sense, but it does not erase the possibility that God’s judging may include correction.
These verses explicitly present continuity: Yahweh’s name/renown spans generations, and that enduring identity is shown in ongoing governance (“will judge”) and ongoing mercy (“will have compassion”).
