Historical Context
The scene fits the period after Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon (early 6th century BC), when many Judeans lived far from their homeland. Jerusalem was not only a city but the center of national memory, worship life, and shared identity, so its loss meant more than relocation. In that setting, captors could treat the exiles’ songs as entertainment, while the exiles experienced those songs as bound to a ruined place and a shattered community. The oath reflects the pressure to adapt and the counter-pressure to preserve allegiance.
Theological Significance
Psalm 137:5–6 is a personal oath spoken to Jerusalem. The speaker treats Jerusalem as the center of identity and worship-life, not merely a hometown. Explicitly, he vows that if he “forgets” Jerusalem, he deserves to lose the use of the right hand and the ability to speak or sing (tongue stuck).
