Question 1

In verses 13–14, what actions does the speaker attribute to God, and what response does that produce?

Accepted Answer

The speaker credits God with actively shaping him: God “formed” his inmost being and “knit” him together in his mother’s womb. Those verbs picture careful, personal involvement rather than a remote creator. The immediate response is thanksgiving and awe. The speaker says he is “fearfully and wonderfully made,” which frames human life as impressive and weighty, not casual. He also widens the focus from himself to God’s works in general: “Your works are wonderful,” and he claims an inner certainty about it (“my soul knows that very well”).

Question 2

What does “inmost being” contribute to the meaning of God’s forming work in verse 13?

Accepted Answer

“Inmost being” pushes the claim beyond physical assembly alone. The speaker is saying God shaped what is most internal and personal—his inner life, not just his outward frame. In the flow of Psalm 139, this fits the earlier emphasis that God knows thoughts and words (139:1–6). The point is that God’s knowledge of the speaker is grounded in God’s prior involvement: God formed the person at the deepest level from the start. The verse doesn’t explain the process; it emphasizes personal origin and intentional design.

Question 3

How do verses 15–16 develop the theme of hiddenness and God’s sight?

Accepted Answer

Verses 15–16 underline that the earliest stages of the speaker’s existence were hidden from people but not hidden from God. The speaker says his “frame wasn’t hidden” even when he was “made in secret,” and he uses weaving language to picture gradual formation. “The depths of the earth” intensifies the idea of being out of view, like a concealed workshop. Verse 16 adds that God saw the speaker’s “unformed” beginnings and connects that sight to God’s “book,” reinforcing that God’s attention extends back before birth and reaches across the whole lifespan.

Question 4

What is the likely function of the images “knit,” “woven,” and “book” in this poem?

Accepted Answer

These images function like vivid pictures meant to communicate meaning more than mechanics. “Knit” and “woven” suggest careful crafting, complexity, and continuity—like something assembled thread by thread, not random or sloppy. “Book” suggests a record or plan held by God: the speaker’s life is not unknown, forgotten, or outside God’s oversight. Since the psalm is prayerful poetry, these images press the emotional and theological point that God’s involvement is intimate and ordered, even if the text does not define exactly how God’s planning relates to future events or human choices.

Question 5

What does “my soul knows that very well” (v. 14) add to the speaker’s claim?

Accepted Answer

It shows the speaker is not making a detached observation; he is expressing settled conviction. The line emphasizes an internal, personal certainty that God’s works are wonderful, including God’s work in making him. In context, this acts as a hinge between describing God’s forming activity (v. 13) and reflecting on God’s unseen involvement (vv. 15–16). The speaker’s “knowing” here is presented as deep awareness rather than mere information. It also reinforces the larger theme of Psalm 139: God knows the speaker thoroughly, and the speaker in turn recognizes God’s remarkable work.

Question 6

In verse 16, what are the explicit claims, and what is left implied?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, verse 16 says God saw the speaker’s “unformed” state and that “in your book they were all written—the days that were ordained…when as yet there were none of them.” The plain claim is that God’s knowledge and ordering reach back before any days were lived. Implied questions remain: Does “written” mean every detail is fixed, or is it a poetic way to say the whole life is already accounted for by God? The verse itself emphasizes God’s prior awareness and oversight; it does not spell out a full theory of how the future works.

Question 7

How do verses 13–16 support the earlier theme in Psalm 139:1–12 that God “knows” the speaker?

Accepted Answer

The earlier verses describe God’s complete knowledge of the speaker’s daily life—actions, words, thoughts, and presence in every place. Verses 13–16 add a foundation for that claim: God’s knowledge is not only continuous observation of a finished person; it is connected to God’s forming work from the womb. God knows the speaker because God has been involved from the beginning, including the hidden stages no one else could see. By grounding “you know me” in prenatal formation and “unformed” beginnings, the poem portrays God’s knowledge as intimate and comprehensive across the entire span of life.
