God’s hands at the start The speaker says God formed his “inmost being” and “knit” him together in his mother’s womb. The point is not that creation happened far away, but that God personally shaped what is most internal and personal, and did so during pregnancy.
The speaker’s thankful response Because he sees himself as “fearfully and wonderfully made,” the speaker thanks God. He adds that God’s works are wonderful and says his “soul” knows this well—this is settled awareness, not a passing idea.

Literary Context
Psalm 139 is a first-person prayer that moves between describing God’s complete awareness and responding emotionally to that reality. Before these verses, the speaker has emphasized that God knows his actions, words, and thoughts and is present wherever he goes (139:1–12). Verses 13–16 ground that “you know me” claim in the speaker’s origin: God’s knowledge reaches back before birth. After this section, the psalm continues to insist that God’s thoughts are vast and returns to personal appeal and self-examination (139:17–24).
Historical Context
The psalm comes from Israel’s worship tradition, where prayers and songs were used both privately and in community settings. Its imagery fits an ancient world with limited visibility into pregnancy and fetal development, so the womb is spoken of as a hidden place where only God truly “sees.” References to being “woven” and to a “book” reflect everyday crafts and record-keeping used to express careful design and ordered planning. The language is poetic and personal rather than medical, aiming to honor God as the one overseeing life from its earliest stage.
