A plea for God to act, and a personal break The speaker wishes God would end the wicked and then directly tells violent people to leave him alone. The request to God and the command to the violent sit together: he wants both God’s intervention and a clear personal separation from those who shed blood.
Why the speaker rejects them He gives reasons: their speech is hostile toward God, and they misuse God’s name. The problem is not only their violence but their opposition expressed in words, treating God with contempt.
Declared loyalty through opposition The speaker addresses Yahweh and asks two rhetorical questions: doesn’t he hate those who hate God, and isn’t he grieved by those who rise against God? He then states his hatred is complete and treats them as his own enemies, making loyalty to God the basis for personal hostility.
Literary Context
Psalm 139 as a whole speaks in the first person as a prayer that reflects on God’s thorough awareness of the speaker’s life, constant presence, and careful formation of the speaker. After confident reflection (vv. 1–18), vv. 19–22 introduce a sharp shift: the speaker separates himself from violent people and aligns his own stance with God’s stance toward God-opponents. The final lines of the psalm (vv. 23–24) return to self-examination, asking God to search and lead the speaker, which frames vv. 19–22 as part of a larger concern for integrity and loyalty.
Historical Context
The psalm comes from Israel’s worship world, where prayer often included both trust and protest, and where violence, false accusation, and threats from powerful people were lived realities. In that setting, calling certain people “bloodthirsty” signals not only moral disgust but danger to the community. Speaking “against” Israel’s God and misusing the divine name also reflects social conflict, where opposing God could be expressed through public speech, oaths, or propaganda. The speaker’s “get away from me” fits a public, communal context where allegiance and association mattered.
Theological Significance
These verses mark a sudden turn in Psalm 139 from celebrating God’s complete knowledge to drawing a hard boundary against people described as violent and hostile to God. The speaker explicitly asks God to kill “the wicked” (v.19) and tells “bloodthirsty” people to leave him (v.19). He then gives reasons: they speak against God in a wicked way and misuse God’s name (v.20).

Key terms like “hate” (used three times here) can name an inner emotion, an active stance, or a declared allegiance against a rival. Also, the psalm moves quickly from “your enemies” (v.20) to “my enemies” (v.22), and readers differ on whether that shift is mainly rhetorical alignment with God or a claim of personal enmity.
Explicitly, the passage shows that the psalmist’s devotion includes distancing himself from violent people and treating opposition to God as a serious moral and communal threat. It also shows that speech against God and misuse of God’s name are placed alongside bloodshed as marks of “wickedness.” The passage contributes a portrait of loyalty framed in terms of separation and opposition, while leaving open how far that opposition is meant to be enacted by the speaker versus entrusted to God as judge.
