Where interpretation differs

Two main questions can be read differently.

First, “forever and ever” may be taken as literal lifelong-and-beyond language, or as strong poetic speech meaning “continually” and “without stopping” (inference from the poetic setting, but prompted by the phrase itself).

Second, “his greatness is unsearchable” can mean God is not fully knowable in total, or that God’s greatness is inexhaustible—always more to discover, even though real knowledge is possible (both are ways of explaining the same line).

Why the disagreement exists The psalm is poetry with deliberate repetition and superlative language (“greatly to be praised”). That style can be read either as maximal, literal time language, or as heightened praise language. Also, the word “unsearchable” can be heard as a limit on human understanding (“cannot reach the end”) or as an invitation to ongoing discovery (“never exhaust”).

What this passage clearly contributes The passage links unending praise to God’s identity and worth rather than to a momentary feeling. It also frames praise as both personal (“my God”) and public in scope (“the King”). Finally, it presents God’s greatness as beyond full human measurement, which explains why praise, in the poem’s logic, can never be “completed.”
