Literary Context
Psalm 16 is a first-person prayer that moves from seeking protection to expressing confidence and gratitude. Earlier lines frame Yahweh as the speaker’s chosen refuge and source of good, setting up why guidance matters. Verse 7 fits as a praise statement inside that larger trust: because Yahweh is the speaker’s portion and secure support, the speaker can also credit Yahweh for directing decisions and reinforcing them inwardly. The logic flows from choosing Yahweh, to receiving counsel, to experiencing inner instruction that continues beyond daytime activity.
