An unbroken, rhythmic message “Day after day” and “night after night” describe a continuous relay. The sky “pours forth” speech and “displays” knowledge, meaning the message is not occasional; it keeps coming in regular cycles, like a constant report that never runs out.

The poem starts broad and public: anyone under the sky can see the testimony. It uses vivid person-like language for the heavens to stress the constant, ongoing nature of this witness. Verses 1–3 establish a tension the poem will keep using: real communication is happening, but it does not come through ordinary words. Historical Context
The psalm comes from ancient Israel’s worship world, where songs were used for prayer and praise in communal settings and personal devotion. People lived close to the rhythms of sunrise, sunset, and the night sky, with little artificial light to diminish the visibility of stars and seasonal patterns. In that setting, the regularity and beauty of the sky would naturally serve as a shared, everyday “evidence” for the maker’s power and craftsmanship. The language fits a poetic culture that often describes nature as if it could speak, sing, or testify.
Theological Significance
These lines portray the visible sky as a constant, public “announcement” about God. The “heavens” and the “expanse” are described as if they are actively reporting something: God’s “glory” (his greatness on display) and his “handiwork” (his skill as maker). That is an explicit claim of the poetry (v.1).
