The Hebrew term behind “lack/want” (want) can point to being in need, but the line itself does not specify whether the need is material, relational, spiritual, immediate, or long-term. The rest of the psalm will supply examples, but v.1 alone leaves room for scope and timing to be read differently.

What this passage clearly contributes

This verse sets the theme for the whole psalm: because Yahweh relates to the speaker as a shepherd, the speaker expects dependable provision rather than abandonment. It establishes an intimate voice, frames God’s care as ongoing (not a one-time rescue), and introduces the key outcome the poem will illustrate: sufficiency under God’s guidance and protection (Psalm 23:1).
