Literary Context
Psalm 23 is a short poem of trust that speaks in the first person (“me”) and addresses the LORD indirectly (“he”). The opening line (v.1) frames everything: because the LORD is like a shepherd, the speaker lacks nothing essential. Verse 2 then fills out what that care looks like in everyday terms: places to rest, food to sustain, and water to drink. The following lines (vv.3–4) continue the same pattern, shifting from provision to direction and protection. The logic is simple: the shepherd’s presence is shown by the shepherd’s leading.
