Psalm 69 fits the world of ancient Israel where prayer-poems were used both privately and in gathered worship. The imagery assumes a land where sudden floods and muddy riverbeds were familiar dangers, making drowning a natural metaphor for being overwhelmed. Likewise, “restore what I didn’t take” does not give details about the setting (court, community pressure, or personal conflict).
