Literary Context
Psalm 23 is a first-person poem that portrays the LORD as a shepherd who provides, guides, and protects. Verses 1–3 emphasize provision and direction in peaceful settings; verse 4 shifts to threat and darkness while keeping the same shepherding image. A key movement is the change from talking about the shepherd (“he”) to talking directly to him (“you”), which makes the comfort feel more immediate. The verse also turns from describing what the shepherd does to stating why fear is refused: the shepherd’s presence and instruments of care.
