Unit 1 (v. 8a): Yahweh as the peopleās strength
The verse states that Yahweh is ātheir strength,ā shifting attention from an individualās support to the communityās support. It presents Yahweh as the dependable source of power or resilience for a group, not merely a private helper.
Unit 2 (v. 8b): Yahweh as a protective stronghold for the anointed
The second line adds that Yahweh is a āstrongholdā connected with deliverance for āhis anointed.ā The picture is of a secure place of protection that results in being brought through danger. The anointed person is singled out as someone Yahweh specially backs, implying that the leaderās safety and success are part of how the community experiences Yahwehās strength.
Unit 3 (v. 8 overall): Linking community strength and anointed leadership
Together, the two lines pair ātheirā (the people) with āhisā (the anointed belonging to Yahweh). The verse suggests these are not competing ideas: Yahweh strengthens the people, and Yahweh also safeguards the anointed representative through whom the peopleās welfare is often pursued.
