“Into your hand I commend my spirit” and “You redeem me” (v.5). Some interpret this as the language of extreme peril, possibly near death. Why the disagreement exists Hebrew prayer-poetry often uses compact phrases that can carry more than one shade of meaning. Words like “righteousness,” “name,” “vanities,” and “redeem” can point to overlapping ideas (fairness and faithfulness; reputation and commitment; idols and false securities; past rescue and confident expectation). The psalm also moves quickly between plea and confidence, which makes it hard to pin every line to only past, only present, or only future.
