Historical Context
The psalm’s heading (not included in the quoted lines) links it to David’s flight from his son Absalom, a setting that fits the language of multiplying opponents and people “rising up” in revolt (cf. 2 Samuel 15:13). In that kind of crisis, threats were both military and social: alliances shifted, rumors spread, and public confidence could collapse quickly. A claim that God will not help a leader would function as political propaganda as well as personal shaming, aiming to isolate him and weaken resistance.
