Question 1

What actions and attitudes describe “the wicked” in verses 12–15?

Accepted Answer

Verses 12–15 portray the wicked as both calculating and hostile. They “plot” against the just and show open aggression (“gnashes his teeth”). Their plans are not limited to private resentment; they prepare real harm, pictured through drawing a sword and bending a bow. The targets are specific: the poor and needy, and those “upright in the way.” The passage then describes a reversal: the very instruments of harm end up turned back, with the attacker’s sword entering his own heart and his bow broken. The focus is the failure and collapse of violent intent.

Question 2

How does verse 13 explain God’s response to the wicked person’s plotting?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 presents God’s response as calm and confident rather than alarmed. The Lord “laughs” at the wicked person, and the reason is given: God “sees that his day is coming.” In the flow of the poem, this does not mean the suffering described in verses 12 and 14 is imaginary or unimportant. It means God has full awareness of where the wicked person’s path ends. The “laugh” is a poetic signal that the threat does not control the future; God already sees its limit and its end.

Question 3

What contrast does the psalm make between “a little” and “abundance” in verses 16–17, and what reason does it give?

Accepted Answer

Verses 16–17 argue that “a little” possessed by the righteous is better than the “abundance” of many wicked. The text’s reason is not sentimental; it is about durability and support. The “arms” of the wicked—meaning their strength and ability to act—will be broken. By contrast, Yahweh “upholds” the righteous. So the contrast is not simply about amounts of money; it is about what kind of life and future that money is tied to. The righteous person’s smaller portion is linked to stability under God.

Question 4

In verses 18–20, what does the psalm say about time, endurance, and disappearance?

Accepted Answer

Verses 18–20 use time language to describe two destinies. Yahweh “knows the days of the perfect,” and their “inheritance” is said to be “forever,” stressing lasting security. In “time of evil” and “days of famine,” they are not finally put to shame and are satisfied—language of preservation through crisis. The wicked, however, “perish” and “vanish.” The imagery intensifies: they are like the beauty of the fields that passes, disappearing “like smoke.” The point is a sharp contrast between endurance and disappearance, not a detailed schedule of events.

Question 5

What do verses 21–22 present as outward signs of the wicked and the righteous?

Accepted Answer

Verses 21–22 connect character to financial behavior. The wicked are described as borrowing and not paying back, which signals unreliability and disregard for obligation. The righteous are described as giving generously, suggesting open-handedness rather than exploitation. The closing summary ties these patterns to God’s stance: those blessed by him inherit the land, while those cursed by him are cut off. The text does not claim that every generous person is immediately prosperous; it portrays generosity and integrity as belonging to the life God supports, in contrast to the hollow, self-serving practices of the wicked.

Question 6

What does “inherit the land” seem to mean within this unit (vv. 18, 22), based on its contrasts?

Accepted Answer

Within verses 18 and 22, “inherit the land” functions as the opposite of being “cut off” and as part of a wider picture of lasting security. It is paired with language about an inheritance that lasts, not being shamed in hard times, and being sustained through famine. In that setting, “land” likely carries its concrete sense—secure place, livelihood, and belonging—especially in an agrarian society. At the same time, the unit’s repeated contrast (enduring share versus vanishing like smoke) suggests it also stands for lasting stability under God, not merely a short-term property claim.
