Psalm 54 is a short plea for help that mixes urgent request with confidence. Earlier lines ask God to save and to hear the prayer, while also describing threatening outsiders and violent people. The mood then shifts to assurance: God is described as the helper and the one who “upholds” the speaker’s life (just before v. 5). Verse 5 follows that confidence by asking God to turn the attackers’ wrongdoing back on them, and the psalm then continues toward promises of willing praise and thanksgiving.
