Some readers take “destroy them” as a request for the enemies’ death. Others understand it more broadly as asking God to stop them—silence them, cut off their plans, or remove their ability to harm—without specifying how severe the outcome must be.

A second difference is how to hear “repay.” It can sound like strict payback (the enemies get what they deserve), or like reversal (their intended harm is turned back), which may feel less like personal retaliation and more like God preventing injustice from succeeding.

Why the disagreement exists

The Hebrew wording allows a range of outcomes for “destroy/cut off,” from ending a threat to ending the people themselves. Similarly, “repay/return” can emphasize measured compensation or the turning back of harm. “In your truth” can be heard as “because you are faithful” or “in line with your accurate judgment,” both of which shape the tone of the request.

This verse contributes a compact picture of divine justice: wrongdoing against the vulnerable is not ignored, and the speaker appeals to God’s dependable character as the basis for setting things right.
