Literary Context
Psalm 61 is a prayer that moves from need to reassurance. Earlier lines portray distance and weakness and ask God to lead the speaker to safety and let him live near God’s presence. Verse 5 functions as a hinge: it gives reasons for confidence by pointing to what God has already done—he has heard the speaker’s vowed commitments and has granted him a share among those who fear God’s name. The following verses (not included here) continue that hopeful direction by focusing on the king’s life and lasting protection, so v. 5 helps set up the shift into assurance.
