Literary Context
Psalm 67 is a communal prayer and praise song that asks God to bless “us” and then links that blessing to a wider mission: other peoples learning who God is and responding. Verse 2 functions as the stated reason for the blessing requested just before it (often expressed as “so that…”), giving the psalm’s outward-facing direction. The psalm repeatedly expands the horizon from Israel’s experience to the whole world, anticipating repeated calls for “the peoples” to acknowledge God later in the poem.
