Shared ground

Psalm 67:5 is a refrain: a repeated line meant to be said or sung again. Its explicit claim is simple and direct: the speaker asks that “the peoples” praise God, and then repeats the request with added scope—“all the peoples.” The praise is addressed to God as “you,” making it a direct appeal rather than a detached statement.

The repeated wording also signals a shared, public response. The verse pictures praise not as a private act of one person or one community, but as a collective voice made up of many communities.

Where interpretation differs

Some readers take “the peoples” to mean the nations in general—humanity beyond Israel—so the refrain highlights God’s worldwide rule and the hope of universal acknowledgment. Others think it may have a more immediate horizon: neighboring peoples known to Israel, with “all” meaning “all those peoples around us,” not necessarily every nation on earth.

Some also read the line mainly as prayer (“may this happen”), while others treat it as a worship cue inside a service (“the congregation responds like this”). The text itself can support both, since it is a request in form and a chorus in function.

Why the disagreement exists

The Hebrew word for “peoples” can refer broadly to nations or more locally to particular groups, and the verse gives no list or boundaries. Also, repeated refrains in psalms can be both genuine petitions and set liturgical responses; Psalm 67:5 looks like both at once.

What this passage clearly contributes

This refrain centers the psalm’s goal: many peoples together praising Israel’s God. It presses scope (“all”) and unity (a shared chorus). Even without stating the reasons for praise in this verse, it holds the psalm’s larger movement in place: God’s dealings with one community are not meant to end there, but to be recognized across peoples (compare the wider flow of Psalm 67:1–7).
