47:8Meaning
God’s rule reaches the nations The verse states the main claim directly: God reigns over the nations. The next line restates the same idea with a royal picture—God is seated on a holy throne—presenting God as an active, reigning king rather than a distant deity.
Unit 2 (v. 9a): Leaders assemble and are linked to Abraham’s God
The psalmist describes “princes of the peoples” gathering together. This gathering is then connected to identity: they are called “the people of the God of Abraham,” implying that the assembled nations and their leaders are being drawn into recognition of Israel’s God.
Unit 3 (v. 9b–c): Earth’s defenses belong to God; therefore God is exalted
A reason is given for the gathering and the conclusion: “the shields of the earth” belong to God. The image points to protection, military strength, or ruling power as ultimately God’s property. The final line responds with a verdict of praise: God is “greatly exalted,” higher than all earthly authority.
