All-day speech about God’s right action and rescue, beyond what can be counted The speaker’s “mouth” signals public, verbal testimony. He will talk about God’s “righteousness” and “salvation” throughout the day, presenting them as continuous themes of his speech. He adds a limit: he does not know “its full measure,” meaning God’s acts are too many or too great to calculate or fully describe.
Coming with God’s powerful deeds; highlighting God alone The speaker says he will “come with” the mighty acts of the Lord Yahweh, suggesting he will approach worship or life’s challenges carrying reminders of what God has done. He then commits to “make mention” of God’s righteousness—again emphasizing verbal remembrance. Literary Context
Psalm 71 is a personal prayer that moves between asking for help and promising public praise. The psalm repeatedly contrasts threatening opponents with the speaker’s long history of relying on God, including from youth, and it looks ahead to continued witness. Verses 14–16 sit in the middle of a praise-and-testimony section that answers earlier pleas for rescue with a vow of ongoing hope and speech. What was previously requested (deliverance) becomes what will be reported (God’s acts), shifting from petition to confident proclamation.
Historical Context
The psalm fits the world of Israel’s worshiping community, where people voiced distress and gratitude in poetic prayer that could be spoken privately and also shared in communal settings. The language assumes a society in which God’s deeds in history and in personal life were recounted aloud as a normal part of devotion, especially in gatherings connected to the sanctuary. It also reflects a setting where enemies, slander, and social vulnerability were real threats, and where maintaining hope and public speech about God’s past help functioned as a stabilizing practice.
Theological Significance
These verses present a turn from danger to a settled resolve. The speaker chooses ongoing hope and intends not only to keep praising God but to expand that praise (v.14). He also commits to public, verbal testimony (“my mouth”) about God’s righteousness and God’s rescue, described as constant (“all day”) (v.15). The passage treats God’s deeds as so many or so great that the speaker cannot fully measure or count them (v.15). Finally, the speaker plans to “come with” God’s mighty acts in view and to speak about God’s righteousness as the central theme—giving God the credit (v.16).

Two phrases can be read in more than one responsible way.
First, “add to all of your praise” can mean increasing the amount of praise (more frequent or more expansive praise) or deepening its content (more reasons and fuller description). Both fit the basic claim that the speaker intends growth in praise, not mere maintenance.
Second, “I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord Yahweh” may picture arriving at a worship gathering with God’s past deeds ready to be recounted, or it may refer more generally to approaching life’s challenges with God’s powerful works in mind.
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew expressions are brief and image-based. “Add to praise” does not specify whether the increase is mainly quantity or richness. “Come with” does not name a destination, so readers infer either a sanctuary setting (public testimony in worship) or a broader daily-life setting (testimony as a constant posture). The end phrase “even of yours alone” likewise leaves room for whether “alone” mainly stresses exclusive credit to God or the main topic of speech.
What this passage clearly contributes This unit links hope, praise, and testimony: hope is not described as silent or private, but as expressed through ongoing speech about who God is and what God does (vv.14–15). God’s righteousness here is presented as something to be talked about alongside God’s rescue, suggesting “righteousness” includes God’s reliable, right way of acting in the world, not merely an abstract quality (vv.15–16). The speaker’s inability to measure God’s saving acts underscores abundance and human limits in reporting them (v.15). The closing focus (“yours alone”) makes the testimony God-centered rather than self-focused or shared-credit praise (v.16).
