Some readers take “They shall live” (v.15) as referring to the king’s continued life; others read it as the people’s life and flourishing under the king’s reign. Both fit the psalm’s theme that ruler and people rise or fall together, but the immediate flow about gifts, prayers, and blessings leans toward the king as the main focus.
Another question is what it means that “Men shall be blessed by him” (v.17). It can mean that people experience well-being through the king’s rule (his justice and stability become a channel of blessing). It can also mean people count themselves fortunate “in relation to” him—using his name as a benchmark for blessing (for example, “may you be blessed like him”). The next line (“All nations will call him blessed”) supports the idea of public acclaim, while the broader psalm supports real benefits flowing from his reign.
A further difference is how to hear the scope of “all nations” (v.17). Some treat it as an ideal, worldwide horizon for the king’s reputation and influence; others read it more concretely as the surrounding peoples who interact with Israel through diplomacy, trade, and tribute.
