Psalm 73 is a reflective prayer that wrestles with a moral problem: people who act badly often seem to do well. The larger psalm begins with a conviction about God’s goodness, then admits the speaker nearly lost his footing when he watched the prosperity of the wicked. Verses 4–12 sit early in the argument as a detailed description of what the speaker sees and why it is so destabilizing. The repeated “therefore” signals the logic: their ease produces pride and violence, and their success emboldens their words and attracts followers.

The psalm’s setting is the everyday social world of ancient Israel, where visible wealth, health, and social influence could be read as signs of a “good life.” In agrarian and village-based economies, the contrast between secure elites and burdened laborers would be stark. The passage assumes a public culture where reputation, speech, and patronage matter: the powerful can intimidate, mock, and gather supporters. It also assumes a shared language about “the Most High,” meaning Israel’s God, and the scandal is that these people can talk as if divine oversight is irrelevant while their status keeps growing.

Shared ground

Psalm 73:4–12 presents the speaker’s “problem data”: arrogant, wealthy people can look unusually secure and comfortable. The text explicitly claims they seem spared from normal troubles (even at death), and that this ease produces a visible pattern of pride, cruelty, and unchecked speech (vv. 4–9). It also explicitly connects their success with social momentum: others gather around them, and benefits keep flowing their way (vv. 10, 12). The section ends with their own words that treat God’s awareness as doubtful or irrelevant (v. 11).
