Question 1

In verses 4–5, what specific kinds of “ease” does the speaker claim the arrogant rich experience?

Accepted Answer

The speaker describes their ease in comparative, everyday terms. They seem to have “no struggles” as they approach death (v. 4), and their strength appears stable rather than fragile. In ordinary life they appear exempt from the burdens and troubles that mark “other people” (v. 5). The claims are framed as what they “seem” to be experiencing from the observer’s angle: a life with fewer pains, fewer setbacks, and a kind of bodily security. These observations set up why their situation looks enviable and morally confusing within the psalm’s larger argument.

Question 2

How do verses 6–7 connect prosperity to character and behavior? What is the passage’s cause-and-effect logic?

Accepted Answer

The passage links their outward success to inward and outward corruption using “therefore” (v. 6). Because life goes smoothly, pride becomes like something worn publicly, and violence is pictured as constant clothing rather than a rare lapse. Verse 7 continues the portrait: their prosperity shows in bodily imagery (“eyes bulge with fat”), and their inner world overflows limits—thoughts, desires, and self-importance expand beyond normal boundaries. The explicit logic is not “wealth automatically equals evil,” but that unchecked ease can harden into arrogance and visible harm.

Question 3

What do verses 8–9 emphasize about their speech, and why is speech central in this portrait?

Accepted Answer

Verses 8–9 focus on the social power of their words. They mock and speak maliciously (v. 8), and from arrogance they threaten oppression—speech that intimidates and pushes others down. Verse 9 then enlarges the picture: their “mouth” is set in the heavens and their tongue ranges across the earth. This imagery suggests speech that reaches beyond normal human limits: boasting, pretending to ultimate authority, or speaking as if nothing is out of bounds. In this portrait, speech reveals their self-exaltation and spreads their influence.

Question 4

How does verse 10 extend the “therefore” logic, and what social dynamic is being described?

Accepted Answer

Verse 10 introduces another “therefore,” suggesting a consequence that follows from their prosperity and swagger: people “return to them,” and “waters of abundance” are consumed. The text describes momentum—others gather around the successful, and abundance keeps getting taken in. The verse does not specify motives, so it can portray admiration (people drawn to them) and/or dependence (people attaching themselves to their household or network). In either case, the social result strengthens the wicked: they are not isolated; they gain a crowd and continued benefits.

Question 5

What is the force of the questions in verse 11 (“How does God know?” “Is there knowledge in the Most High?”)?

Accepted Answer

In verse 11 the wicked voice skepticism about divine awareness and oversight. The questions function rhetorically: they are not seeking information but implying that God either does not see, does not care, or is too distant to hold them accountable. Calling God “the Most High” keeps the traditional title while undermining its practical meaning: they live and speak as if no higher authority matters. In the flow of the passage, their ongoing success (vv. 4–10, 12) emboldens this confidence, making disbelief in accountability sound plausible to observers.

Question 6

How does verse 12 summarize the portrait, and what tension does it create for the larger psalm?

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 labels the group plainly: “these are the wicked.” Yet it pairs that moral verdict with two observations: they are “always at ease” and they “increase in riches.” The tension is that their visible outcomes contradict a common expectation that wickedness leads to obvious downfall. This summary crystallizes the speaker’s crisis: what he sees in real life does not match a simple moral equation. Within Psalm 73, this sets up the later movement toward resolution, but in this unit the emphasis remains on the destabilizing appearance of unjust prosperity.
