A change in chosen center The poem says God rejected “the tent of Joseph” and did not choose Ephraim as the leading tribe. Instead, he chose Judah and, more specifically, Mount Zion as the place he loved.

Literary Context
Psalm 78 is a long teaching song that retells Israel’s story to shape future loyalty. Earlier sections move through God’s care, Israel’s repeated distrust, and the heavy consequences that follow, including defeat and disruption of the main worship center. Verses 65–72 function as the closing resolution: the tone shifts from judgment and collapse to renewed action, selection, and stability. The conclusion narrows from “Israel’s history” to two anchors for the community’s life: Zion as the chosen place and David as the chosen leader, both presented as God’s deliberate decisions.
Historical Context
The ending assumes a period when Israel’s main worship site and military position suffered a major blow, followed by a later recovery and re-centering. References to rejecting Ephraim and choosing Judah point to a transfer of national prominence from the northern tribes to a southern base. Mount Zion suggests Jerusalem becoming the focal point of national life, and David’s rise from shepherding fits early monarchy traditions about a new kind of leadership. There is also some uncertainty about what exactly “the tent of Joseph” (v. 67) points to. Many take it as the earlier main worship center in the north (often associated with Shiloh). Others read it more broadly as northern dominance or leadership, not only one location.
A final question is how to understand “forever” (v. 69). Some read it as an unending claim about Zion’s sanctuary. Others understand it as poetic language for long-term stability—“as lasting as the earth”—without making a precise statement about the length of the building’s existence.
