Question 1

In verse 17, what two descriptions are given for the person the community asks God to support?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 uses two parallel phrases: “the man of your right hand” and “the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.” The first highlights nearness to God’s authority (“right hand” suggesting honored position and delegated strength). The second stresses his humanity (“son of man”) while also stating that his strength is not self-made—God “made [him] strong.” The verse frames this leader as someone God has already been involved with and whose role is connected to God’s own purposes, not merely national success.

Question 2

What does the image of God’s “hand” doing something communicate in this passage?

Accepted Answer

The speakers ask, “Let your hand be on” the chosen man. In context, “hand” communicates active support—God’s power and enabling presence resting on the leader. It fits the psalm’s larger situation of weakness and threat: what is needed is not only better circumstances but God’s decisive backing. The text does not explain mechanics; it simply treats God’s “hand” as the reason a leader can stand firm and act effectively for the people’s good and for God’s aims.

Question 3

How does verse 18 connect God’s action with the people’s response?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 gives a cause-and-result pattern. First, it states the intended outcome: “So we will not turn away from you.” Then it asks for the means: “Revive us, and we will call on your name.” The community portrays renewed faithfulness and prayer as flowing from God’s reviving work. The verse does not claim they can guarantee loyalty by willpower alone; instead, it portrays dependence on God to restore their life and stability, which in turn produces continued allegiance and public calling on God.

Question 4

What is being asked in the refrain of verse 19, and how is it stated?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 gathers the whole plea into three short requests: “Turn us again,” “Cause your face to shine,” and the expected result, “and we will be saved.” Addressing “Yahweh God of hosts” emphasizes God’s authority over overwhelming powers. “Turn us again” asks for restoration—being brought back from a condition of loss, distance, or collapse. “Face to shine” asks for renewed favor and attention. The closing confidence (“we will be saved”) expresses trust that God’s favorable presence changes their situation.

Question 5

What does the repeated language about being “turned again” add to the meaning of these closing lines?

Accepted Answer

Because it functions as a repeated chorus in the psalm, “Turn us again” becomes the psalm’s summary of what is wrong and what is needed. It implies they are not merely suffering external pressure; they are also in a state of being “turned away” from wholeness—displaced, diminished, or estranged. In verses 17–19, that restoration request narrows onto two focal points: God strengthening a representative leader and God reviving the people so they return to steady loyalty and prayer.

Question 6

How might “son of man” function here based on the immediate wording of verse 17?

Accepted Answer

In verse 17, “son of man” sits beside “man of your right hand,” and both point to the same figure. The most immediate force is to underline that the one being strengthened is fully human (“son of man”) while still specially supported by God (“whom you made strong for yourself”). The phrase can function as a plain description rather than a unique title: a human representative empowered for God’s purposes. The verse itself does not identify him by name, office, or future role.

Question 7

Within these verses, what seems to be the meaning of “saved,” and what is its relationship to God’s “shining face”?

Accepted Answer

“We will be saved” comes right after the request for God’s face to “shine,” so “saved” is linked to restored divine favor and attention. In the psalm’s setting of communal distress, the most direct sense is rescue from the crisis harming the nation—security, stability, and survival. At the same time, the wording is not tightly limited; it is broad enough to cover the full reversal of their threatened condition. The passage grounds salvation in God’s renewed presence rather than in human strategy.
