Verses 4–7 continue the complaint by focusing on the length of the distress and the social humiliation it causes, then repeat the same refrain in a slightly expanded form, keeping the prayer’s logic tight and cyclical.
Historical Context
The psalm speaks from a time when Israel (or the wider covenant community) experiences prolonged hardship that affects daily life and public standing. The references to neighbors, enemies, and ongoing disgrace suggest political pressure, regional conflict, or invasion that has lasted long enough to feel like a settled condition. Because the psalm itself does not name a king, battle, or city, it can fit multiple crisis periods in Israel’s history when communities gathered for worship while facing external threats and internal strain, using shared liturgical language to plead for reversal.
