Literary Context
Psalm 82 portrays God addressing and correcting those who hold power to judge and protect others. The psalm’s earlier lines call these authorities to defend the weak and stop favoring the wicked (vv. 1–4), then v. 5 explains what happens when they ignore that call: they live without moral perception and society destabilizes. The verse works like a turning point: it summarizes persistent refusal (“they don’t know… don’t understand”) and then states the ripple effect (“foundations… shaken”), setting up the coming announcement of God’s decisive action later in the psalm.
