Literary Context
Psalm 93 is a short poem that celebrates Yahweh’s kingship and stability over against forces that look unstable and dangerous. Verse 3 sits in the middle of the psalm’s movement: after affirming Yahweh’s reign and the world’s firmness (vv. 1–2), the poem turns to the image of waters rising and roaring (v. 3). The next line (v. 4) answers that threat by contrasting the loud waters with Yahweh’s greater power, and the psalm closes by stressing the reliability of Yahweh’s testimonies and the holiness of his house (v. 5).
