After Moses died, the LORD told Joshua to arise, cross the Jordan, and lead Israel into the land God was giving them Joshua 1:1–2. He also described the goal as taking possession of the promised land Joshua 1:2–3.
1Now it happened after the death of Moses the servant of Yahweh, that Yahweh spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses` minister, saying,
2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you, and all this people, to the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
3Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread on, to you have I given it, as I spoke to Moses.
