Being dead to sin means forgiveness is more than pardon from guilt; it also means sin is no longer the rightful master. Romans 6 connects forgiveness with union to Christ, whose death and resurrection shape a new life.
Paul is rejecting the idea that grace encourages more sin. Because believers are united with Christ, they are to count themselves dead to sin and alive to God.
This gives moral change a gospel foundation. Believers resist sin because they belong to Christ, not because they are trying to earn grace.
should not confuse dead to sin with never tempted by sin. Romans calls believers to live from their new identity while still actively resisting sin.
