Who are the two olive trees and “two anointed ones” in Zechariah 4?

Zechariah asks about the two olive trees supplying the lampstand in Zechariah 4:11–12. The interpreting messenger answers that they are “the two anointed ones” who stand by the Lord of the whole earth in Zechariah 4:14. The text presents them as appointed attendants in the vision.

Passage context

In Zechariah 4:11–12, the prophet, still trying to understand the vision, asks the interpreting figure about two different parts of what he sees. First he asks about two olive trees positioned on either side of the lampstand. Then he asks again, more specifically, about two olive branches near two “golden spouts” that pour out golden oil. These verses sit inside the lampstand vision of Zechariah 4, one of the night visions. The prophet has already seen the lampstand and olive trees and has received some explanation about the larger point of the vision (earlier in the chapter).

Why it matters

Zechariah is still inside the lampstand vision and admits he does not yet understand the details.
