A woman as a heavenly sign John sees a “great sign” in heaven: a woman with sun-like clothing, the moon beneath her feet, and a crown made of twelve stars. She is pregnant and in active labor, crying out in pain as she is about to give birth. The imagery blends beauty, authority, and vulnerability.
A dragon prepares to destroy A second heavenly sign appears: a great red dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven crowns. With its tail it drags a third of the stars from the sky to the earth. Then the dragon positions itself in front of the laboring woman, ready to devour the child immediately upon birth.
The child is born and removed from danger The woman gives birth to a son, described as a male child who “is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron.” But the dragon does not succeed: the child is caught up to God and to God’s throne, placing the child beyond the dragon’s immediate reach.

In that setting, symbolic visions gave a way to speak about power, threat, and endurance without narrating events like a court record. The cosmic scale of the imagery also fits a world where imperial rule claimed universal reach and competing loyalties were daily realities.
Theological Significance

What the “stars” and the dragon’s action mean. The dragon’s tail throws “a third of the stars” to the earth. Some take “stars” as angelic beings, implying a heavenly rebellion or defeat affecting spiritual powers. Others take “stars” more broadly as symbolic imagery of sweeping devastation or the dragon’s great influence, without mapping each element to a one-to-one historical event.
How to understand the 1,260 days. Some read it as a literal duration in days. Others read it as a symbolic way of describing a limited, God-bounded period of oppression and protection.
John gives vivid details (sun, moon, twelve stars; seven heads, ten horns, crowns) but withholds direct identifications in this unit.
