Question 1

What does the passage mean by calling the woman and the dragon “signs,” and how does that guide how the scene should be read?

Accepted Answer

The text introduces both the woman and the dragon as “signs” seen in heaven (vv. 1, 3). That word choice signals that the images are meant to point beyond themselves. The woman’s cosmic clothing and crown, and the dragon’s many heads, horns, and crowns, read like symbolic portraiture rather than ordinary description. The “sign” framing encourages attention to what the scene communicates: conflict, threat, and God’s protection, rather than asking first where such creatures would physically appear. It also explains why key identities (who the woman is, who “they” are) are not spelled out here.

Question 2

What details in vv. 1–2 present the woman as both honored and vulnerable?

Accepted Answer

Honor appears in the woman’s imagery: she is “clothed with the sun,” stands with the moon under her feet, and wears a crown of twelve stars (v. 1). Those features suggest splendor and status. Vulnerability appears immediately afterward: she is pregnant, in labor, crying out in pain (v. 2). The passage holds these together on purpose—she is not portrayed as weak in significance, but as exposed to danger at a critical moment. That contrast sets up the drama of vv. 3–4, where the dragon targets her child precisely when she is most vulnerable.

Question 3

How do vv. 3–4 portray the dragon’s power and strategy, and what is the immediate goal of the dragon?

Accepted Answer

The dragon is described with multiple heads, horns, and crowns (v. 3), which together communicate formidable authority and violence. The tail sweeping a third of the stars to the earth (v. 4) adds to the sense of wide-reaching destructive capacity, whether understood as affecting heavenly beings or as symbolic of sweeping ruin. The strategy then becomes focused: the dragon positions itself before the woman “so that” it might devour the child when born (v. 4). The immediate goal is not general chaos but preventing the child’s life and future rule.

Question 4

What is explicitly said about the male child in v. 5, and what is inferred from those statements?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the child is a “son, a male child,” and he “is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron” (v. 5). The text also explicitly says the child is “caught up to God and to his throne,” putting him beyond the dragon’s immediate reach. From these statements, readers often infer that the child is a messianic ruler figure because worldwide rule and the “rod of iron” language echo royal/messianic themes. But the passage itself, in this unit, does not name the child; it provides role and destiny (rule) and location (God’s throne).

Question 5

How does v. 6 shift the scene after the child is taken up, and what does it emphasize about God’s actions?

Accepted Answer

After the child is secured, the focus returns to the woman: she flees into the wilderness (v. 6). The verse emphasizes that her refuge is not accidental—she has “a place prepared by God.” It also emphasizes sustained care: “there they may nourish her,” even though the caretakers (“they”) are not identified. Finally, it emphasizes limitation and timing: the provision lasts for “one thousand two hundred sixty days.” Even without deciding whether the number is literal or symbolic, the text clearly presents the period as defined, suggesting that danger and hardship have boundaries within God’s overarching control.

Question 6

What questions does the passage leave open, and how do those open points affect interpretation?

Accepted Answer

Several major elements are left unidentified: the woman’s precise identity is not stated, the meaning of the twelve stars and her cosmic clothing is not explained, the identity of “they” who nourish her is not given, and the “stars” swept down by the dragon can be read in more than one way. The 1,260 days is also not interpreted in the passage itself. These open points force interpreters to decide how much to connect the imagery to specific people or events versus reading it as a broad symbolic portrayal. The text’s clarity lies more in the conflict-and-protection storyline than in decoding every symbol.
