Question 1

What two sources are said to produce the smoke that fills the temple, and why does the verse name them?

Accepted Answer

The verse says the smoke comes “from the glory of God” and “from his power.” Those two sources stress that what fills the temple is not an accidental effect or an angelic trick; it is directly connected to God’s own presence and authority. Naming both “glory” and “power” highlights both the overwhelming visibility/weight of God’s presence (glory) and God’s effective ability to carry out what is about to happen (power). The text itself does not define the terms, but it clearly roots the coming sequence in God.

Question 2

What immediate consequence does the smoke have in the scene, and how absolute is the wording?

Accepted Answer

The immediate consequence is that “no one was able to enter into the temple.” The wording is strong: it does not say entry was discouraged or restricted by a guard; it says entry was not possible. The verse does not list exceptions or clarify who might have tried to enter. The main point is the closure itself: God’s presence fills the space in a way that blocks access. This creates a boundary between what is about to proceed (the plagues) and any normal “temple access” that might otherwise occur.

Question 3

How does the verse define the duration of the temple’s inaccessibility?

Accepted Answer

The verse sets a clear time boundary with “until”: no one can enter the temple until the “seven plagues of the seven angels would be finished.” That makes the closure temporary but firm. It lasts exactly as long as the plague sequence runs its course. The text does not say what happens immediately after completion, but it does state the restriction is tied to the completion of the plagues. This “until finished” wording frames the plagues as a single, continuous process that reaches an endpoint.

Question 4

What does the verse emphasize about the relationship between God and the seven angels with the plagues?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the verse identifies the plagues as belonging to the seven angels: they are “the seven plagues of the seven angels.” At the same time, it places the whole scene under God’s “glory” and “power,” because the smoke filling the temple comes from God, not from the angels. Put together, the text portrays the angels as agents who carry out a task, while the setting and authority of the task are grounded in God’s presence. The verse emphasizes divine initiative and control without denying angelic involvement.

Question 5

How does Revelation 15:8 function as a transition into the next chapter’s actions?

Accepted Answer

As the close of the vision in 15:5–8, the verse signals that preparation has ended and execution is about to begin. The temple is filled with smoke, and access is blocked, while the seven plagues move toward completion. That makes the next step—when the plagues are poured out (16:1 and following)—feel unavoidable and uninterrupted. The verse does not describe the plagues yet; it builds anticipation and sets conditions: God’s presence dominates the sanctuary space, and nothing enters to pause or alter the sequence until it is finished.

Question 6

What key ideas are repeated in the verse, and what effect does the repetition have on meaning?

Accepted Answer

The verse repeats “temple” and “seven,” and it links “glory” and “power” as paired causes of the smoke. Repeating “temple” keeps the focus on God’s dwelling-place imagery rather than on earth or human institutions. Repeating “seven” reinforces completeness and the structured nature of the coming judgments: it is a defined set with a defined endpoint. The pairing of “glory” and “power” reinforces that the coming events are both an expression of who God is (glory) and what God can do (power).
