Historical Context
Smyrna was a prosperous port city in Roman Asia with strong public loyalty to Rome and a visible culture of honoring imperial power. In such a setting, people who refused customary public acts of allegiance could be viewed as suspicious or disloyal. The passage assumes social and economic pressure on this Jesus-following community, including poverty and public slander, and anticipates legal trouble such as imprisonment. It also reflects tension involving local Jewish communities and boundaries of recognized identity, where accusations could shape how Roman authorities treated minority groups.
Theological Significance

How to understand âthose who say they are Jews, and they are notâŠa synagogue of Satanâ (Rev 2:9). Some interpret this as claiming these opponents are ethnically Jewish but, by opposing Jesusâ people, show they are not acting as Godâs true people. Others read it as indicating they are not Jews in any sense but are presenting themselves as such for social or legal advantage (for example, to gain protected status or influence accusations).
