What does “make all things new” mean—renewal or replacement (or both)? Some emphasize transformation: the same creation is renewed, cleansed, and repaired. Others emphasize replacement: the former order passes away and a truly new order takes its place. The immediate context of “new heaven and new earth” can be read in either direction, and the phrase “all things” can be heard as comprehensive either way.

What does “freely” mean in relation to “thirsty” and “overcomes”? Many read “freely” as stressing that life is a gift, not earned. At the same time, the passage distinguishes recipients using two descriptions (“thirsty” and “overcomes”), which some take as two ways of describing the same faithful person, and others take as two angles on who participates: desire/need on one side, endurance/loyalty on the other.

Why the disagreement exists Revelation regularly uses shared divine titles and throne imagery while also highlighting the Messiah’s exalted role, so identifying the speaker can be difficult in short segments. Also, the book’s symbolic language can compress multiple ideas into one phrase (“new,” “done,” “water of life”), leaving room for readers to weigh nearby context and broader biblical echoes differently.
