Question 1

In verse 15, what three descriptions are given of the crowd’s status and activity, and how do they relate to each other?

Accepted Answer

Verse 15 links three ideas in a tight sequence. First, they are “before the throne of God,” which signals privileged access and safety in God’s ruling presence. Second, they “serve him day and night in his temple,” describing ongoing service or worship as their steady way of life. Third, “He who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them,” adding the promise of personal protection and secure belonging. Together, the verse moves from location (before the throne), to ongoing vocation (serving), to divine safeguarding (sheltered by the enthroned one).

Question 2

What does the image “He who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them” communicate in the flow of the passage?

Accepted Answer

In the passage’s logic, the “tent” image explains how their position before the throne is not risky but secure. It suggests being covered, sheltered, and claimed as protected guests rather than exposed outsiders. The image fits with the next verse’s list of threats that will not touch them: hunger, thirst, sun, and heat. So the “tent” is not mainly about geography or architecture; it functions as a picture of comprehensive protection that matches the concrete promises of relief that follow.

Question 3

In verse 16, what kinds of hardships are named, and what do the repeated negatives (“never…any more”) emphasize?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 names two kinds of distress. One is deprivation: hunger and thirst. The other is exposure to harsh conditions: the sun beating down and oppressive heat. The repeated negatives (“never…any more”) emphasize finality rather than temporary relief. The point is that these needs and threats are not merely reduced or managed; they are ended. The wording also keeps attention on what will not happen to them, highlighting the completeness of the promised protection rather than describing actions the crowd performs.

Question 4

How does verse 17 explain (“for”) the promises in verse 16?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 provides the reason the protections of verse 16 hold: “for the Lamb…will be their shepherd.” The passage grounds the end of hunger, thirst, and harmful heat in ongoing care and guidance from the Lamb. The Lamb leads them to “living springs of waters,” portraying a sustained, renewing supply rather than a one-time drink. The verse then adds God’s personal comfort—wiping away every tear—which completes the explanation by addressing not only physical vulnerability but also grief. The “for” ties relief directly to the Lamb’s shepherding and God’s comfort.

Question 5

What is surprising about the Lamb’s position and role in verse 17, and why might that matter for interpretation?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 places the Lamb “in the midst of the throne,” a position associated with supreme authority, yet assigns him the role of “shepherd,” which emphasizes guidance and care rather than domination. That combination is surprising because it unites central rule with tender provision. It matters for interpretation because the passage makes the Lamb’s shepherding the stated reason for the crowd’s lasting safety and satisfaction. The promises are not presented as automatic conditions of the environment alone; they are anchored in the Lamb’s ongoing leadership from the throne’s center.

Question 6

Across verses 15–17, what sequence of ideas connects throne, temple service, protection, provision, and comfort?

Accepted Answer

The passage forms a connected chain. Because they are before God’s throne, they are portrayed as secure participants in God’s presence. That security expresses itself as continual service in God’s temple. God then shelters them (“spreads his tent”), which matches the next set of outcomes: no hunger, no thirst, no destructive sun or heat. The final link explains why this is guaranteed: the Lamb, centrally positioned at the throne, shepherds them to living springs. The sequence ends with God removing grief at its source by wiping away every tear, completing the picture of total protection and restoration.
