Just before this, Boaz has instructed his workers to protect Ruth and allow her access to water and she has come near to speak with him. After this conversation, Boaz will continue to provide for her with food and extra grain, and Ruth will bring the results back to Naomi, advancing the story’s central problem of survival and belonging. The scene also develops how characters explain motives and interpret events without stopping the narrative momentum (see Ruth 2:1–13).

The story is set “in the days when the judges ruled,” a period before Israel’s monarchy when local clans and elders handled many community matters and social stability could vary by region. Gleaning was a recognized way for the poor and vulnerable to gather leftover grain during harvest, but a foreign widow would still be socially exposed and dependent on others’ goodwill. Moabites were an outside people group in relation to Israel, so Ruth’s presence in Bethlehem carries both ethnic difference and economic risk. In that setting, Boaz’s attention is not merely polite; it functions as tangible protection and provision within ordinary village life.
