Ruth Carries Out the Instructions

These verses sit in the middle of the nighttime plan that Naomi gives Ruth in Ruth 3:1–5. The story has moved from daytime gleaning in chapter 2 to a private, high-stakes meeting at the end of the harvest. Verses 6–7 narrate Ruth’s obedience and set the physical scene: the threshing floor, the completed meal, the sleeping place near the grain, and Ruth’s approach. The next lines (vv. 8–13) will supply the conversation and request that this setup makes possible.

In the period of the judges, threshing floors were open-air work sites where harvested grain was processed and then guarded, especially at night. Workers would eat, drink, and sleep near the grain pile to protect it from theft and animals. A woman moving around a threshing floor after dark could be misunderstood, so the narrative highlights quietness and careful timing. The mention of uncovering “his feet” reflects the practical realities of sleeping outdoors with a cloak or covering, and it also creates the moment that will wake Boaz soon after.

Shared ground

Ruth 3:6–7 presents Ruth as acting with careful obedience and timing. The text explicitly says she went to the threshing floor and did everything Naomi instructed. It also explicitly depicts Boaz finishing his food and drink, being in a cheerful mood, and lying down at the edge of the grain heap. Ruth then approaches quietly, uncovers the area around his feet, and lies down.

The scene’s setting matters for meaning. A threshing floor at harvest time was a worksite where grain was processed and then guarded at night. That helps explain why Boaz sleeps by the grain and why the narrator highlights Ruth’s quiet, discreet movements.

Where interpretation differs

Two details generate different readings.

First, “his heart was merry” can be taken as simple contentment after a successful meal and work, or as suggesting lowered alertness. The wording itself reports his mood, but it does not directly describe intoxication or poor judgment.

Second, “uncovered his feet” can be read narrowly as uncovering the literal feet to create discomfort so he wakes, or more broadly as uncovering a lower-body covering. The text does not spell out how much was uncovered.

A related question is what Ruth’s lying down communicates: it may be merely the position Naomi instructed in order to initiate a later conversation, or it may already function as a symbolic approach asking for protection and commitment. Verses 8–13 will clarify the intent more directly.

Why the disagreement exists

The narrative is intentionally restrained: it reports actions but delays explicit dialogue and motives until the next verses. Also, the physical detail (“feet”) can be used as a normal body-part reference or as indirect language, and readers differ on how indirect the author is being here.

What this passage clearly contributes

These verses establish (1) Ruth’s deliberate compliance with Naomi’s plan, (2) the ordinary harvest setting of guarding grain at night, and (3) a carefully staged moment that will force an awakening and conversation. The text’s clear emphasis is on discretion and timing rather than on describing sexual behavior.

Ruth 3:1–5 sets up the plan; Ruth 3:8–13 interprets the action through the coming dialogue. uncovered marks the key physical action that drives the next scene forward.
