Question 1

What changes in the scene when the speaker addresses the “daughters of Jerusalem” instead of the beloved?

Accepted Answer

The verse widens the focus from the couple’s private moment to a more public audience inside the poem. That shift matters because the speaker is no longer describing feelings to the beloved but issuing a solemn charge to outsiders who might be watching, commenting, or influencing the romance. It functions like a pause button after intimacy has been building in the surrounding lines. The “daughters of Jerusalem” also make the line feel communal: love is not only a private experience but something that can be affected by social presence, expectations, and speech.

Question 2

What features of the verse make the warning sound “binding” or oath-like?

Accepted Answer

The key element is the verb “I adjure you,” which is stronger than a casual request. It sounds like a formal charge meant to obligate the hearers. The line also calls on “the roes” and “the hinds of the field,” which reads like invoking witnesses to strengthen the seriousness of what is said. Together these features create a sense that the speaker is doing more than expressing a preference; she is setting a boundary around love’s timing and treating that boundary as important enough to be publicly affirmed.

Question 3

In the phrase “by the roes, or by the hinds of the field,” what role does the animal imagery play in the warning?

Accepted Answer

At minimum, the animals keep the Song’s imagery grounded in the natural world and maintain continuity with the poem’s countryside tone. More specifically, the animals can function like poetic “witnesses,” strengthening the charge the way solemn speech sometimes calls on something outside the speaker. They may also suggest qualities associated with gazelles and deer—quickness, sensitivity, and easily startled behavior—matching the idea that love can be disturbed or forced too soon. The verse does not explain which nuance is intended, so the imagery likely carries multiple resonances.

Question 4

What does it mean in this verse to “stir up” or “awaken” love?

Accepted Answer

The language presents love as something that can be roused prematurely by outside action—pressure, provocation, or attempts to accelerate intimacy. The paired verbs (“stir up” and “awaken”) reinforce the picture of love as dormant or not-yet-ready, like something asleep. The point is not that love is bad, but that its beginning and growth can be mishandled. The warning implies that trying to manufacture love’s intensity or timing can be harmful or at least out of step with love’s proper development in the poem’s world.

Question 5

How does the closing phrase “until it so desires” shape the meaning of the warning?

Accepted Answer

It adds a timing principle: love has an appropriate moment that should not be overridden. The phrase can be heard as personifying love itself—love wakes “when it wants,” not when others demand it. It can also be understood as the readiness of the people involved—love should not be awakened until the beloved(s) desire it. Either way, the verse draws a boundary between natural readiness and external pressure. In context, that boundary functions as a deliberate pause right after heightened affection, showing that strong desire does not cancel the need for proper timing.

Question 6

How does Song 2:7 function in the flow of the poem around it?

Accepted Answer

It acts as a refrain-like interruption: just as the poem’s romantic momentum rises, the speaker turns outward and issues a restraint. That structural move matters because it prevents the Song from reading as nonstop escalation. Instead, it frames love as both intense and ordered—capable of being celebrated while also requiring patience. By addressing an audience, the poem also acknowledges that relationships are often observed or influenced by others. The warning therefore fits the literary pattern of moving between private desire and public commentary, slowing the pace at a key moment.
