Literary Context
This verse functions as a transition into a new scene. Just before it, the speaker describes an anxious nighttime search that ends with finding the beloved and bringing him toward a secure place (3:1–5). Now the perspective shifts outward: someone watching describes an impressive approach from a distant place. The verse opens with a question, creating suspense, and then answers indirectly through imagery—smoke-like movement and layered perfumes—rather than naming the person. It begins a larger tableau that will soon fill in details about the entourage and its splendor (3:7–11).
