Question 1

In verses 12–15, what repeated words or paired images shape the main picture (especially in v. 12 and v. 15)?

Accepted Answer

The main picture is built by repetition and pairing. Verse 12 repeats “locked” and stacks near-synonyms: garden, spring, and fountain—each reinforcing restricted access and treasured privacy. Verse 15 also stacks near-synonyms but with a different effect: fountain, well, living waters, and flowing streams—each reinforcing freshness, movement, and supply. The shift from “sealed” to “flowing” is the key movement: the beloved is guarded, yet she is also described as a source of life and delight. The poem uses multiple images to intensify one praise rather than making separate unrelated points.

Question 2

What does the metaphor of a “locked garden” communicate in the flow of the poem: admiration, suspicion, ownership, or something else? What in the wording supports your answer?

Accepted Answer

In context, the “locked garden” functions as admiration and praise more than suspicion. The speaker calls her “my sister, my bride,” and then immediately elaborates not with accusations but with an overflowing description of fruit and fragrance (vv. 13–14). The locked/sealed language sits alongside luxury and beauty language, suggesting she is precious and protected, not being monitored. Also, the poem’s momentum moves toward invitation and mutual enjoyment in the next verse (4:16), which fits better with a celebratory sense of exclusivity than with anxious control.

Question 3

How do verses 13–14 develop the garden image, and what effect does the long list of plants and spices create?

Accepted Answer

Verses 13–14 move from the boundary (“locked”) to the interior (“your shoots are an orchard”). The plant list creates a sense of variety and abundance: fruit (pomegranates and “precious fruits”) and then a layered sequence of fragrances (henna, spikenard, saffron, calamus, cinnamon, incense woods, myrrh, aloes). The effect is cumulative—like walking deeper into a rich garden where one scent and delight follows another. It communicates that the beloved’s attractiveness is not one-dimensional; it is many-sided, costly, and overflowing.

Question 4

What is the relationship between “sealed fountain” (v. 12) and “a fountain of gardens…living waters” (v. 15)? Are these contradictory or complementary?

Accepted Answer

They are complementary parts of a single picture. “Sealed fountain” highlights guarded access: the source is not for anyone who happens to come by. “A fountain of gardens” and “well of living waters” highlights what the source is like when accessed: it is fresh, moving, and able to supply life beyond itself. The poem can hold both because it is describing value and intimacy, not public utility. The movement from sealed to flowing also intensifies praise: she is not only protected; she is also deeply life-giving and satisfying.

Question 5

What does “streams from Lebanon” add to the meaning of the water imagery in verse 15?

Accepted Answer

“Lebanon” evokes a northern mountainous region associated with coolness, forests, and abundant water sources. By linking her to “streams from Lebanon,” the poem heightens the sense of freshness and desirability: not a muddy pool but clean, invigorating flow. It also adds a touch of grandeur and distance—something sourced from a celebrated place—so the beloved’s life-giving quality is pictured as remarkable and almost luxurious. Within the poem, it strengthens the final crescendo: she is not merely pleasant; she is like a refreshing, powerful supply.

Question 6

What kinds of meaning are clearly grounded in the text, and what kinds of meaning are more inferred (for example, about sexuality, purity, or spiritual symbolism)?

Accepted Answer

Clearly grounded: the speaker praises the woman using garden-and-water metaphors; she is described as protected (“locked,” “sealed”) and richly delightful (fruit, spices, living water). Also grounded is the poem’s tone of admiration and the movement toward mutual enjoyment nearby in context (4:16). More inferred: precise one-to-one symbolism (e.g., exactly what the “lock” corresponds to in lived experience), and whether “living waters” should be heard as primarily purity, vitality, sensuality, or all three. The text supports multiple resonances but does not define them explicitly.

Question 7

How does the address “my sister, my bride” function within this metaphorical praise, even if it is not explained here?

Accepted Answer

Within the praise, “my sister, my bride” sounds like a relational title meant to combine closeness with covenant commitment. Even without explaining the phrase, the poem places it right before “locked garden,” which frames the guardedness as connected to a rightful relationship rather than mere distance. It also softens the imagery: the beloved is not an object; she is a person addressed with affection and honor. The phrase helps the reader hear the “locked/sealed” language as cherished exclusivity within love, not as cold separation.
