Protected access and private delight The woman is compared to a garden that is locked and a spring/fountain that is sealed. The repeated images all point the same direction: she is not open to anyone, and her “delight” is kept for the one who rightly belongs there. The tone is admiration, not suspicion—her guardedness is presented as part of her value.
Fruitfulness and an orchard’s variety The man shifts from boundaries to what is inside the garden. Her “shoots” are pictured as an orchard, led by pomegranates and “precious fruits.” The image suggests vitality, maturity, and richness, as though her presence yields desirable “produce,” not emptiness.
He names plants and spices (henna, spikenard, saffron, calamus, cinnamon, incense trees, myrrh, aloes). The list is intentionally overflowing, stacking one fragrance on another to communicate that she is delightful in many ways. It also suggests a space set apart for celebration, like a garden prepared with costly scent.
Literary Context
This passage sits inside a longer praise song in which the man celebrates the woman’s beauty and desirability with layered metaphors (4:1–15). Just before this, he has described her features and the sweetness of her love (4:1–11), then turns to the garden image (4:12–15) as a climactic way to speak about her as both exclusive and richly attractive. The “garden” language anticipates the woman’s response that invites him into the garden (4:16), so these verses function as his buildup toward mutual enjoyment.
Historical Context
The imagery assumes an agrarian and trade-connected world where gardens, orchards, and water sources were valuable and often protected. In a dry land, a spring or well could mean survival and prosperity, so speaking of a “sealed fountain” suggests something guarded and prized. The list of scents evokes luxury goods—some local, some imported—fitting a setting where perfumes, resins, and spices were known markers of wealth and celebration. References to Lebanon call up northern mountains famous for forests and fresh waters, strengthening the picture of cool, abundant supply.
Theological Significance
These verses are love poetry. The man speaks to the woman as a “locked garden,” a “locked spring,” and a “sealed fountain,” then fills out the picture with fruit and rare aromas, and finally calls her “a well of living waters” with streams that flow. The plain point of the images is that she is both (not open to everyone) and (rich, life-giving, and delightful).

What the “locked/sealed” language refers to. Some read it mainly as sexual exclusivity (her intimacy is reserved for the rightful beloved). Others take it more broadly as personal privacy and guarded access to her whole self (reputation, affection, time, and body). Both readings stay close to the metaphor, but they emphasize different parts of what “access” means.
What “living waters” highlights. Some hear “living waters” mainly as freshness and vitality (moving water, not stagnant). Others also hear overtones of purity and cleansing, or simply heightened sensual pleasure through the water imagery. The text itself clearly leans toward vitality and abundance; the extra nuances are inferred.
The poem gives vivid images without specifying one-to-one meanings. “Garden,” “spring,” and “sealed fountain” naturally suggest both intimacy and protection, and “living waters” naturally suggests both freshness and desirability. Because the language is evocative and not explained, readers differ on how narrowly to map the symbols.
It contributes a strong picture of delighted admiration that joins two ideas: (1) the beloved is not publicly available (“locked,” “sealed”), and (2) within rightful access there is overflowing richness (fruit, spices, “a fountain of gardens,” and “living waters”). It also contributes the theme that desire can be expressed with honor: guardedness is portrayed as part of her worth, and abundance is portrayed as something celebrated rather than taken.
