The Gospel (Good News)
Theological Definition
In the Bible, the “good news” is God’s announced message about what he has done to rescue and restore people and the world, centered on Jesus the Messiah. It is not merely advice or moral instruction, but a proclaimed reality that calls for trust and allegiance and creates a new community. Scripture presents this message as promised beforehand, revealed in history, and spread through preaching to all nations.
Key Occurrences in Romans
16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation to everyone who believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
17For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith to faith. As it is written, "But the righteous shall live by faith."
1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,
2which he promised before through his prophets in the holy scriptures,
3concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,
4who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
5through whom we received grace and apostleship, to obedience of faith among all the nations, for his name`s sake.
6Among whom you are also called to be Jesus Christ`s.
16But they didn`t all listen to the glad news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?"
17So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18But I say, didn`t they hear? Yes, most assuredly, "Their sound went out into all the earth, Their words to the ends of the world."
8But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth, and in your heart;" that is, the word of faith, which we preach:
9that if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11For the scripture says, "Whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."
12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him.
13For, "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved."
14How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher?
15And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!"
14I myself am also persuaded about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish others.
15But I write the more boldly to you in some measure, as putting you again in memory, because of the grace that was given to me by God,
16that I should be a servant of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be made acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
17I have therefore my boasting in Christ Jesus in things pertaining to God.
18For I will not dare to speak of any things except those which Christ worked through me, for the obedience of the Gentiles, by word and deed,
19in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of God`s Spirit; so that from Jerusalem, and around as far as to Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ;
20yes, making it my aim so to preach the gospel, not where Christ was already named, that I might not build on another man`s foundation.
21But, as it is written, "They will see, to whom no news of him came. They who haven`t heard will understand."
21But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets;
22even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction,
23for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;
24being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;
25whom God set forth to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith, in his blood, to show his righteousness because of the passing over of the sins done before, in the forbearance of God;
26for the showing of his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.
23Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,
24but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead,
25who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
