Proverbs commends diligent labor, prudent planning, and responsible use of time. Sloth and procrastination lead to lack and vulnerability, while steady effort tends toward provision and stability. Work is treated as moral formation as well as practical necessity.
4He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand, But the hand of the diligent brings wealth.
11He who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, But he who chases fantasies is void of understanding.
24The hands of the diligent ones shall rule, But laziness ends in slave labor.
4The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, But the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.
23In all hard work there is profit, But the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.
4The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
5The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit; And everyone who is hasty surely rushes to poverty.
29Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings; He won`t serve obscure men.
30I went by the field of the sluggard, By the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
31Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, And its stone wall was broken down.
32Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction:
33A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep;
34So shall your poverty come as a robber, And your want as an armed man.
6Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;
7Which having no chief, Overseer, or ruler,
8Provides her bread in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest.
9How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?
10A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep:
11So your poverty will come as a robber, And your scarcity as an armed man.
