Question 1

What sequence of images does Zechariah 11:1–3 use to portray the spread of destruction?

Accepted Answer

The poem starts at the top: Lebanon’s “doors” are opened and fire devours cedars, the most famous and lofty trees. Then it moves down and outward: fir trees wail because the cedar has already fallen, and the oaks of Bashan are also summoned to wail as “the strong forest” comes down. Finally, the poem shifts from trees to voices—shepherds wail because their “glory” is destroyed, and young lions roar because the “pride of the Jordan” is laid waste. The sequence widens the circle of witnesses until the whole land seems to echo with loss.

Question 2

In verse 1, what is the effect of commanding Lebanon to “open your doors”?

Accepted Answer

Lebanon is treated as if it were a building or fortress with doors, which makes the coming disaster feel unstoppable. The command implies there will be no successful barrier—whatever is coming will enter and consume what Lebanon is known for: its cedars. Even if the language is poetic personification, it communicates vulnerability and exposure. If the “doors” also suggest borders or defenses, the same effect remains: the land’s protections fail, and the most prestigious symbols of strength become fuel for the fire.

Question 3

How does verse 2 use the fall of one tree type to interpret the fate of others?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 argues from the greater to the lesser: if the cedar has fallen, the fir tree should wail, because its own security is even less. The line “because the goodly ones are destroyed” intensifies this: what is “majestic” is already gone, so a broader collapse is underway. The command for the oaks of Bashan to wail and the statement that “the strong forest is come down” expands the point from individual trees to an entire system of strength. The forest’s downfall becomes a public sign that stability has ended.

Question 4

Who are the “goodly ones” in verse 2, and what in the text supports more than one possibility?

Accepted Answer

At the most direct level, “goodly ones” fits the tree imagery: the finest, most impressive trees are being destroyed. That reading matches the immediate context of cedar, fir, and oaks. At the same time, the phrase can sound like a description used for prominent figures, and verse 3 immediately brings in “shepherds,” which later in the chapter connects with leadership imagery. Because the poem moves easily between nature and human society, the text allows the “goodly ones” to be trees on the surface while also hinting at the fall of the “best” of the land in a wider sense.

Question 5

In verse 3, what does the repeated phrase “A voice of…” contribute to the poem’s meaning?

Accepted Answer

The repeated “A voice of…” turns the lament into something heard across the land, not merely observed. First, the speaker hears shepherds wailing because their “glory” is destroyed—loss that affects livelihood and status. Then the speaker hears young lions roaring because the “pride of the Jordan” is laid waste—loss that affects even the wild places and their inhabitants. This auditory framing makes devastation feel communal and unavoidable: grief is not isolated, and the ruin is so extensive it changes the soundscape of the land.

Question 6

What are the most passage-grounded meanings of the shepherds’ “glory” being destroyed?

Accepted Answer

The text itself ties the shepherds’ wailing to the destruction of their “glory,” without defining it. In context, the most grounded meaning is the loss of what made shepherding prosperous: good pasture, secure grazing, and healthy flocks—resources implied by the earlier forest and land imagery. “Glory” can also include social standing that comes with successful herding in a stable land. Because Zechariah 11 later develops shepherd imagery in relation to leadership, some readers see an added layer: the collapse of leaders’ honor and power alongside material ruin. Either way, it is a real loss felt publicly.

Question 7

What might “the pride of the Jordan” refer to in verse 3, and how does it fit the poem’s movement?

Accepted Answer

“The pride of the Jordan” most naturally points to the Jordan valley’s dense riverside growth—lush thickets associated with strength, abundance, and wildlife habitat. That fits the mention of young lions, which evokes a place where such animals could hide and hunt. The phrase can also function as a broader symbol of the region’s prosperity and security. In the poem’s movement, it serves as the final confirmation that the devastation is not limited to famous forests like Lebanon or Bashan; it reaches even the fertile river corridor. The land’s “pride” is reduced to wasteland, completing the picture of total collapse.
