The angel re-engages and redirects attention The angel who has been speaking with Zechariah moves out (as if stepping forward into the scene) and tells him to look up. The instruction is not to reflect inwardly but to “see” what is now “going forth,” meaning something is actively moving into view or moving out across the scene.
Question, identification, and a broad interpretive claim Zechariah responds in the simplest way: “What is it?” The angel answers first with identification—“This is the ephah that goes forth”—naming the object before explaining it. Then the angel adds a further line that shifts from naming to meaning: “This is their appearance in all the land,” indicating the ephah is being treated as a visible representation connected to people (“their”) and to the land as a whole.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Zechariah’s series of night visions (Zechariah 1–6), where an angel regularly guides the prophet by pointing things out and explaining them. Immediately before this, Zechariah has seen a “flying scroll” that moves outward with a message of exposure and consequence (5:1–4). Now the scene changes: the angel again directs Zechariah’s attention, but to a different object. The pattern is consistent—Zechariah sees, asks “what,” and receives identification—yet the angel’s added comment about “all the land” signals that the vision’s scope is communal and widespread, not private or local.
Historical Context
Zechariah speaks to a community in Judah after the return from exile, living under Persian imperial rule with Jerusalem and its temple restoration still underway. Daily life involved rebuilding, farming, and trade, with limited local power and strong economic pressures. An ephah was a standard unit used in market settings for measuring grain or goods, so the image would feel ordinary and concrete rather than exotic. By using a common container as a central symbol, the vision draws from familiar economic life to portray a condition that the angel says extends through the whole land, not just a single household or leader.

Zechariah is not left to interpret the vision on his own. The same angel who has been speaking with him steps forward again, directs his attention (“lift up your eyes”), and points out something new that is “going forth.” The scene is intentionally visual and public-facing, not private or hidden.
The object is identified as an ephah—a standard measuring container used in ordinary economic life. The vision therefore uses a familiar, everyday item to carry meaning.
The angel adds that this ephah connects to “their appearance” (or what is seen of them) “in all the land.” Explicitly, the symbol is tied both to people (“their”) and to a wide scope (not just one individual case).
Two main questions produce different readings.
First, what does “their appearance” mean? Some take it as something like “what they look like / how they present,” so the ephah represents a visible profile of the people across the land. Others take it more like “their measure” or “their portion,” meaning the ephah stands for what is being measured out to them or what characterizes them.
Second, who are “they”? Some understand it broadly as the community in the land, since the angel says the symbol relates to the whole land. Others expect the “they” to be a particular subset (especially wrongdoers), because the immediately preceding vision (the flying scroll) focused on exposed wrongdoing and consequences.
The disagreement is mainly driven by the wording “their appearance,” which can sound like “what is seen” or can be heard as a way of summarizing what identifies them. Also, the pronoun “their” is not specified in these two verses, so interpreters lean on the nearby context to supply the referent.
This passage introduces a new symbolic object and flags that it has a land-wide meaning. It also shows how the visions work: the angel both identifies the symbol (“this is the ephah”) and begins interpreting it (“this is their appearance in all the land”), preparing the reader for further explanation in the verses that follow.
Zechariah 5:5–6 contributes a concrete bridge between daily economic imagery (a standard measure) and a communal spiritual diagnosis or representation that concerns the whole land, not merely private behavior.
