The vision opens with four chariots Zechariah says he looks up again and sees “four chariots” coming out from between two mountains. Literary Context
These verses open the next vision in a sequence of night scenes in Zechariah 1–6. The repeated “I lifted up my eyes and saw” signals a fresh image and keeps the reader in the prophet’s viewpoint as the scenes change. Just before this, Zechariah has seen a woman carried away in a basket (5:5–11), and now the imagery shifts to chariots and horses. Verses 1–3 do not yet explain what the chariots do; they set the stage by presenting their origin point and their identifying features, preparing for interpretation in the lines that follow.
Historical Context
Zechariah speaks in the early Persian period, when Judeans had returned from exile and were rebuilding communal life in and around Jerusalem under imperial oversight. The community faced practical uncertainty—security, resources, and political stability—while living within a larger empire that managed provinces through officials, taxes, and controlled movement. Against that background, visions using military and travel imagery (chariots, horses, routes) would naturally evoke ideas of power, patrol, and reach across territories. The text here, however, remains at the level of the vision’s appearance, not yet tying it to specific events.
